Excellent Open Source software,
perfectly compatible with Microsoft
Office. It contains a word
processor, a spreadsheet, a database
and an application to make
presentations.
For a long time at
the top of my Top 10 Magic freeware.
Very reliable and intuitive. It can
be used for personal as well as
business purposes.

Scribus
Scribus is a DTP open source of great quality. For
who does not know what DTP is, it means Desktop
Publishing: the programs DTP serve for paginating
texts (generally for newspapers or magazines with
photos, various columns, and with complex aspects of
the page).
DTP apps are not used for writing the texts, but to
insert them into a graphic layer, just like in a
magazine. To understand immediately the
potentialities of Scribus, is enough to give a
glance to some
screenshots.
If you are planning to prepare very complex
magazines (with dozen of pages, photo and different
layouts and sections)it could be necessary - unlike
a normal word processor - some recent hardware
(above all processor and video card).
A version of GhostScript 8.60 (or newer) is
necessary for running Scribus (download from
here).

Abi
Word
t's a great Word Processor
full of features similar to Microsoft Word. Fast,
intuitive, simple and it can be easily configured.
It supports many languages, including the use of
thesaurus.
Completely free and good for everyone. For
those who only need a word processor rather than an
entire package, Abi Word can be considered (as
opposed to Open Office).
