The
Godfather It is a
good app for managing great numbers of audio files;
the Godfather handels various codecs, among which
mp3, ogg, wav, mpc, flac, mp4, aac, ape and others.
It allows to operate in batch, to manage many files
at the same time (for example to rename TAGS, etc.),
and to connect to the Freedb so that to rename the
songs through internet (it is an useful function
when you extract a CD, because it allows to rename
automatically all the tracks, instead of manually
typing them.
At the beginning it leaves a short while lost for
the quantity of windows in the interface, and it
needs some time to understand what we have to do,
nevertheless, at the end we are able to do what we
need.
The function of cataloguing is very good, also for
the excellent number of supported formats.

Mediamonkey
(freeware and shareware) Mediamonkey has many
features similar to GodFather, of which it is a
valid competitor. In comparison to Godfather,
Mediamonkey supports less audio codecs, nevertheless
it is more intuitive and easy-to-use.
The graphical user interface is very beautiful and
clean, one of the best that I have seen for
applications of this kind.
Its strongest features is cataloguing: if we have
thousand of titles in our hard drive, Mediamonkey
will browse and catalog them automatically,sorting
for author, album, year, kind, etc.
When we want to listen to something, we should
only look for author, genre. or year to have the
list of all the tracks with those characteristics on
our HD. If in the forlder with the audio files there
is also a cover of the CD, it will be visualized
(front and back) while we will be listening to the
tracks. We can also give a rating to the tracks
(from 1 to 5 stars), just to listen only the songs
that we like.
Obviously Madiamonkey has a good audio player inside
it.
We can also rip an audio CD and convert among
various formats, even if for these thingsthere are
free programs that make an excellent job (EAC
and DBPowerAMP).
Some functions (like the advanced search) they are
present only in the shareware version, however the
free version will be suitable for most users.
