Backup Partitions

Selfimage
Selfimage is an open source app able to clone a
whole hard drive or a partition; it is very useful
for making a backup of OS, so we can ripristinate it
when needed.
Between most useful features, there are: any file
system support (FAT, FAT32, NTFS, and any other
format), realtime data compression (so we can reduce
the global size of the backup/image), ability to
create a startup CD (with
BartPE or Ultimate Boot CD), and more. We can
even restore images through a network.
A good software, even if it needs more
improvements to reach great shareware apps, like
Acronis True Image.

Macrium
Reflect Free
Despite Macrium Reflect free is the free version of
a shareware app, containing some extra features
(like incremental backup or encryption) it remains
in any case a very interesting partition backup
software, with many useful features, like burning
the image directly on a DVD, or creating a
startup/boot CD.
Very nice app; I consider it the best free app in
this category. We can even backup a whole hard drive
in a single file.

DriveImage
XML
Can backup partitions in most know formats: FAT,
FAT32, NTFS. Free for personal use.
It works without problems, but we have to run it
from Windows and not from a startup CD (this could
be a real problem, if we are not able to boot from
Windows anymore), unless we put it on a CD with
BartPE.
DriveImage XML has many limitations compared to
Acronis True Image (including the lack of support
for not standard partitions), but it is anyway a
good choice, especially for people who have not
critical datas on their pc.

Acronis True Image
(shareware)
Great app, that can backup with a few clicks any
partition (including C:) on our computer, save it
where we like (HDD, external HDD, CD, DVD, etc.) and
restore it without any hassle. We can even start
Acronis True Image from the boot CD that we can
create inside the same software. It works with *any*
kind of partition (FAT, NTFS, Ext, or not-standard
file systems).
Just like all similar apps, the Hard Drive should be
partitioned, otherwise
the backup time becomes huge (just imagine to backup
and restore 1000GBs, it would need many many
hours...).
Acronis True Image is my preferred application for
backup partitions and HDD cloning.
