Antivirus test 2009

This test was conducted in early 2009; the database of samples (containing viruses, worms, trojans, etc.) this year has increased to 58000 (some of the oldest samples were removed, otherwise the number would had been bigger).

The importance of a test of this kind has decreased in the last years, because of the spreading of internet everywhere: now a virus can infect the computers of half world in a few hours, so a test of this kind is not so useful like it was a few years ago (a great test should show the speed of an antivirus to update and react to new threats).

Anyway, a test like this has still an interesting side: the percentage of virus detected from free AVs changes a lot, so it can be useful to understand the difference between free AVs.

Just like every year, each antivirus was updated before the test.

Ranking Name licence

Virus detected

1 Kaspersky Antivirus 2009 shareware 92.39%
2 F-Secure 2009 shareware 91.08%
3 BitDefender 2009 shareware 91.01%
4 Avast! Home 4.8 free 90.41%
5 Avira Antivir Classic 8.2 free 90.10%
6 McAfee Viruscan Plus 2009 shareware 88.17%
7 Panda Antivirus 2009 shareware 85.95%
8 Norton Antivirus 2009 shareware 84.53%
9 Eset Nod32 3 shareware 83.91%
10 AVG 8 Free free 83.46%
11 Rising Antivirus free free 81.24%
12 ClamWin 0.94.1 open source 80.88%
13 Comodo Antivirus free 78.50%
14 PcTools Antivirus free 77.12%
15 MoonSecure 2 open source 74.03%

I have not inserted the time scans because I did not consider them very meaningful, since it would be very difficult in the real life finding a pc with thousands and thousands of different viruses (vice versa it would be possible finding a pc with many viruses of the same kind). In any case, the time with infected samples, changed from a few hours (Nod32, Antivir) to 12 hours (Norton 2009, that in any case is fairly faster with not infected files).

The free AVs performed well even this year; AOL McAfee (that last year arrived in top 3) is no more free, but Avast! Home and Antivir are still on the top part of this test.
Comodo Antivirus had a lot of improvements, but it is still at the bottom of the list.
Just like last year, the difference between ClamWin and MoonSecure (that should be based on the same database) still remains.
