Antivirus test 2007

The comparative was conducted in Feb/March 2007 on a sample of over 35600 infected files. Files were infected with old and new virus, mildly very harmful, worms, trojans and similar. These files were unpacked in a dedicated folder where they got scanned by the different antivirus systems.

Each antivirus was set to operate to the top of its heuristic and scan potential. It is important to note that in the results enclosed below, the slowing down of the OS has not been taken into consideration.

Every antivirus has been updated before the test.

Since the antivirus roundup of 2006, the database of virus samples has more than doubled. For some AV this increasing did not make any difference; in a few cases there have been notable variations.

17 Comodo Antivirus 1.1 freeware 46.67 % 6'21"

NOTE: The time for the scanning concerns the scanning of the 35600 infected files. The scanning speed of infected files can be very different from scanning speed  of files the are not infected.

In comparison to the 2006 comparative, we can easily notice that, despite the virus samples have more than doubled, the principal antiviruses maintain the same percentages of recognition.

In any case, if there have not been changes in top classification (except Panda, that improved both in speed and in recognition), there have been changes in the lower part; AntiVir PE has gone down, slightly, while Norton and the open source ClamWins seem to have been more penalized.

Unfortunately widening of the sample database has not helped the free antiviruses; in fact - with exception of AVS (Active Virus Shield), that has the Kaspersky engine - they have all lost both in percentage of recognition and in positions (furthermore AntiVir has also become heavier than in past), above all ClamWin, the only one that - because of its license - could also be used for business purposes.

Update: starting August 2007 AVS is no more distributed.

A notable disappointment has come from Comodo Antivirus that, unlike the good firewall (always free) of the same software house, not only arrives distant from the first ones, but also from the last ones. Probably in Comodo have assigned more resources to the development of firewall than of antivirus.

I also remember that the 1% of difference between an antivirus and another begins to be meaningful, because on some hundred thousands of circulating threats, 1% of recognition in less means to be exposed to some thousands of risks in more.
