Antivirus test 2006

The comparative was conducted in March 2006 on a sample of over 12000 infected files. Files were infected with old and new virus, mildly very harmful, worms, trojans and similar. These files were unpacked in a dedicated folder where they got scanned by the different antivirus systems.

Each antivirus was set to operate to the top of its heuristic and scan potential. It is important to note that in the results enclosed below, the slowing down of the OS has not been taken into consideration.

Every antivirus has been updated before the test.

Table 1: Results in descending order of recognition

17 NOD32 shareware 78.10 % 1'10"

NOTE: Kaspersky Personal has practically reached the same results of 2004 comparative (94.34%).

The time for the scanning concerns the scanning of the 12000 infected files. The scanning speed of infected files can be very different from scanning speed  of files the are not infected: for example Symantec Antivirus Corporate 10 enters in lethargy when it finds some viruses... it needed over 40 hours to perform the test (I repeated other 2 times because I didn't believe to my eyes).

CONSIDERATIONS: It is interesting to see that the best AV are more or less on the same line, and that also this year the free antiviruses (Antivir PE in head) perform good results in comparison to shareware ones.
Notice that the 1% of difference between an antivirus and another begins to be meaningful, because on about hundred of thousands of circulating virus, the 1% in less it means to be exposed to thousand of virus more.
Please, remember that the results of this comparative are exclusively worth for the present and past viruses. ... there is no guarantee that the (good) actual performances can reflect in the future (even if, comparing these results with those of 2004, the changes are a few).
